The attendants from both societies discussed
the possibilities of sharing common goals regarding Trauma
& Emergency Surgery in Europe. The main difference
between EATES & ETS was differentiated as EATES accepting
only individual membership, but ETS accepting both individual
and society (umbrella society) membership. |

|
Both societies have a common interest in
promoting scientific, educational and other activities
involved in trauma and emergency surgery including trauma
systems, prehospital care, management of traumatic injuries
to all body regions including burns, surgical intensive
care, and organization and management principles in emergency
general surgery. Trauma should not only be seen as skeletal
trauma, but a condition affecting the entire human being.
To facilitate the closer relationship of both societies,
the following decisions
were made: |

Both societies will participate and send
representatives to the next meeting of the other society;
ETS meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia in May 2006 and EATES
meeting in Malmö, Sweden in September 2006. Further
discussions will be initiated on future meetings eventually
leading to a united meeting organized jointly by both
societies. |

Nepal:
Do a Small Thing, Make a Big Difference
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a per
capita GDP of $240 per year and horrendous maternal and child
mortality. It is just emerging from a civil war. The medical
care sector is small and most people have no access to doctors
or nurses. I'm a former RN-paramedic, now emergency physician
and professor at B P Koirala Institute of Medical Sciences in
Dharan, the largest hospital and foremost health professions
university in the country.
Our ED is very busy, filled with extremely sick, badly injured
and very poor people. We get very little funding, as we are
a government institution. We have almost no equipment and no
ambulances. I'm starting programs to train emergency nurses,
paramedics and physicians and my trainees are bright and eager.
If any of you have any used but serviceable equipment or supplies--even
disposables like ambu bags, ventilator circuits, cervical collars,
staplers, etc--please contact me. If anyone wants to volunteer
helping these friendly, gentle people and training young professionals
in a beautiful subtropical landscape at the foot of the Himalayan
range, contact me. Thanks for your help.
